Mining companies may sell copper in concentrate or cathode form. As mentioned above, copper concentrate is most often refined using equipment at a different location than company mine sites.
The first steps of copper processing are the same for both ores mining and transporting. Copper mining is usually performed using open pit mining, in which a series of stepped benches are dug deeper and deeper into the earth over time. To remove the ore, boring machinery is used to drill holes into the hard rock, and explosives are inserted into the drill holes to blast and break the rock.
In 2017, Kinsevere produced 80,186 tonnes of copper cathode. This was the third consecutive year of stable and consistent production above 80,000 tonnes. The strong production was supported by significantly improved mining performance with total material movement increasing by 140% from 6.2 million tonnes in 2016 to 14.8 million tonnes in 2017.
The phase 2 expansion of Tenke Fungurume was completed in 2014 increasing annual copper production by 50% to a nameplate of 195,000 tonnes copper cathode and 15,000 tonnes cobalt hydroxide. The expansion included additional mining equipment, mill upgrades, acid plant expansion and a doubling of the existing tank house capacity.

Electrowon copper cathodes are as pure as or purer than electrorefined cathodes from the smelting process. Thus they are well received by the market. Whereas the conventional process requires an estimated 65 MJ/kg of energy (not including scrap recycling ) the SX/EW process requires an estimated 15 MJ/kg (from heap or dump leaching) to 36 MJ/kg.
Musonoi Project. The concentrate will be roasted and the calcine produced by the roaster will feed directly to a solvent extraction electrowinning (SX/EW) plant to produce copper cathodes and cobalt hydroxide as its final products. Musonoi is expected to produce 31,000 tonnes of copper cathode and 10,000 tonnes of cobalt contained in hydroxide per annum.
